Welsh Government’s match funding for terrestrial projects to be submitted under the EC LIFE programme is sourced from the WG’s Green Infrastructure Capital Grant Programme. The programme has many demands on it, from across the Department, and there are no specific financial allocations made in relation to match funding for bids submitted to the EU LIFE programme. The key thing to note is that each application for match funding will be assessed on its own merits and in the light of available funding at the point of submission. The final decision will be made the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs.
The total available in the Green Infrastructure Capital Grants Programme is as follows:
2017 – 2018 – £3.259 m
2018 – 2019 – £2.436 m
2019 – 2020 – £2.334 m
The figures demonstrate the limited funding available generally under the Green Infrastructure Capital Grant Programme, and therefore the need to prioritise activity generally and to prioritise applications for match funding in support of EU LIFE projects.
The Cabinet Secretary agreed last year to allocate match funding to NRW projects, totalling £2.077 m over the three year period (2017-18 to 2019-20). If one or both of these projects are unsuccessful, the match funding sums will revert back into the Green Infrastructure Programme, but – as above – for all possible uses of that fund – it will not be placed in a separate pot reserved for EU LIFE match funding as no such reserved pot exists.
We would encourage all potential applicants to seek out and utilise all available sources of match funding and discuss any potential projects with Welsh Government officials, along with seeking advice through the JNCC National Contact Point, at an early stage in their development.
